Stephen Williams Obituary

Stephen E. Williams, 71 of Indianapolis passed away August 26, 2020 at his home.  Our beloved “Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Colts Super Fan” Steve “ Froggy” Williams,  is survived by his loving wife Theresa Williams, his son Josh Williams (Ashley), daughter Courtney Wigginton (Josh), grandchildren Marin Wigginton (11), Easton Wigginton (10), step grand child Mia Sellers (16), brother Alan Williams (Kathey), sister Susan Achgill (Bob), sister Becky Maners and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis Williams and Judith Williams.

An “...outdoorsy youth…", Steve “Froggy” Williams was a Scout himself for four years. It was later in life, though, when his own son’s pack needed a Webelos leader, that he rejoined Scouting and “…never left Scouting again.” Steve has served in many roles in Scouting at the Unit, District and Council levels.

His favorite roles were when he was helping others to become better scouts and scouters. He served in many training positions throughout his long career. Steve was on staff for the Council’s National Youth Leadership Training for seven years, culminating in being named Course Director. Steve also served on staff for many Wood Badge courses In Crossroads of America Council, finishing as Course Director for the course in 2010.

Whether he was in an official training role, or not, Froggy was always willing to help others learn. One of Steve’s favorite quotes from Lord Baden-Powell was: "You lead entirely by your own example, that is not just the best way, it is the only way.” Steve lived by this motto every day, with everyone he met. This is one of the reasons that he was so loved by so many fellow scouters.  He was an adult leader in Pack 107 and Troop 184 in Indianapolis; and in Troop 337 in Rossville. Steve was District Commissioner in two Districts; Council Central Section Commissioner; Ass’t. Council Commissioner for Training; served on the Catholic Committee for Scouting. He earned the following awards and honors during his years in scouting:
Commissioner Arrowhead, Commissioner Key, Distinguished Commissioner, District Award of Merit, District Committee Key, Firecrafter Minisino, Order of the Arrow, Webelos Den Leader Award, Scouters Training Award, Scoutmaster’s Key, Scoutmaster’s Award of Merit, James E. West Fellow, Silver Beaver Award and the Bronze Pelican and St. George for his service to the spiritual development of Catholic youth.

Many people move in and out of our lives and leave no trace. Occasionally someone touches our lives, however briefly, and we are forever changed for the better. Some, a rare few, touch our souls and make our hearts smile. Those who have known “Froggy” know how that feels and are forever grateful. He has gone "Back to Gilwell" yet will remain in the hearts of countless scouts and scouters.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.  Donations in Steve's name would be greatly appreciated to the Wood Badge Scholarship Fund.
