A Tribute to Battalion Chief Michale "Mike" Turner
April 19, 1978 – May 30, 2025
There are some people who leave an indelible mark on everyone they meet—Battalion Chief Michale "Mike" Turner was one of those rare individuals. Born on April 19, 1978, and taken far too soon on May 30, 2025, Mike’s impact will live on in the hearts and stories of all who knew and loved him.
Mike’s early years were spent exploring a variety of jobs, earning him the nickname “jack of all trades, master of none.” But at 18, he found his true calling when he joined the Decatur Township Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter. At the time, he insisted he’d remain a “black hat” forever—but life, and legacy, had other plans.
Everything changed when his son followed him into the fire service. It lit a spark in Mike—he realized the difference he could make not just on the fireground, but in shaping the future of the fire service. He began teaching, mentoring, and inspiring those around him. In just a few years, he rose through the ranks—Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, and ultimately Battalion Chief— a title he carried for five short months with immense pride and purpose.
Outside the firehouse, Mike was just as unforgettable. He cherished his annual Father’s Day camping trips, shared a love of nature with his oldest daughter, enjoyed geocaching, hiking, and bonded with his youngest daughter over a mutual obsession with Beetlejuice. He also never missed a chance to ride his motorcycle. No matter where you went with him, he was bound to run into someone he knew—because Mike had a way of connecting with people everywhere he went.
He was funny, unapologetically sarcastic, fiercely honest, and far more brilliant than he ever gave himself credit for. He was the go-to guy for everything and everyone. If you needed advice, support, or just someone to show up—Mike was there. Always.
Mike leaves behind three incredible children: Victoria (Jake) Snider, Michael Turner, and Abigail Turner; his father Bud (Stephanie) Turner; his twin brother Danny (Laurie) Turner; his younger brother Rusty Turner; and a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and fire family who will never forget the impact he made.
A fitting memorial celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 12pm - 4pm at Gallagher’s Pub & Eatery (3149 E Thompson Rd)—a place filled with memories of joy and camaraderie. It’s where Mike toasted his son’s 21st birthday, celebrated recruit graduations, job offers, and the victories of those he loved.
We were fortunate to know him—and even more blessed to be loved by him.
Mike was a passionate advocate for organ donation, especially eye donation. At his mother’s funeral, he reminded everyone: “If you wouldn’t hesitate to take from someone, don’t hesitate to give.” His belief in giving the gift of life and sight speaks volumes about the kind of person he was—selfless, thoughtful, and always looking out for others.
In lieu of flowers—or cacti—we kindly ask that donations be made in Mike’s honor to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, a cause close to his heart.
