John Thomas Wirtz

John Thomas "Wirty" Wirtz, 82 of Indianapolis passed away on August 8, 2025.  John was born October 17, 1942 in Beech Grove, Indiana.  John was preceded in passing by his parents, George Adrian Wirtz and Dorothy (Walpole) Overholt. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, George and Bill Wirtz   Over the course of 33 years at Roncalli High School John was an educator, baseball coach and basketball coach.  He was the coach of the 1982 state runner up baseball team at Roncalli.  Previous to his many years at Roncalli High School he taught and coached at Cardinal Ritter High School.  John is a member of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. John is a member of the Indiana Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame as a fast pitch player.   He was a graduate of UIndy where he played baseball for four years and later served as an Assistant Baseball Coach.  John was also a founding member of Hearts and Hands of Indiana.  

He is survived by his wife, Judy A. Wirtz; brother, Jim Overholt; sisters, Rose Parkhill, Judy Robson, Marcia LeBrecht, Barbara Selvey; step siblings, Mike Overholt, Ed Overholt, Bonnie Hobson, Paul Overholt. He is also survived by his Rossman family who have always been there for John. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12pm Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis, IN 46227.  Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.  Visitation is on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 from 4pm-8pm at Roncalli High School Gymnasium and on Wednesday August 13, 2025 from 10am until the time of services at St. Roch Church.  The members of 1982 State runner up baseball team will serve as pallbearers.  Online condolences may be offered at usherfuneralhome.com.
