James Stevens Obituary

James “Jim” Eugene Stevens, 71, of Greencastle passed away on May 28, 2018 surrounded by family.

He was born on August 1, 1946 in Hazard, Kentucky to Eugene and Hazel (Turner) Stevens.  As a young boy, Jim moved to Southern Indiana where he grew up on a farm with his three brothers.  He graduated from English-Sterling High School in 1964.  He later earned a bachelor’s degree from Oakland City College and a master’s degree from Indiana State University.

Jim was a middle school science teacher at Greencastle Community Schools for thirty-three years.  He is remembered by his students for his fun-loving personality and his many engaging lab activities including teaching students how to bend glass and organizing parachute egg drops.  He also coached both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams.   Jim later went on to own and operate Triple S Pawn Shop and serve as director of the Putnam County Senior Center.

Jim’s hobbies included watching basketball, searching for out-of-the-way restaurants, taking scenic drives, and playing cards.  He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Greencastle.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas Wayne Stevens.  He is survived by his children, James Stevens II and Jennifer Stevens, and his brothers, Robert Michael Stevens and George (Cindy) Stevens.  Per Jim’s request, no formal services will be held.  Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org.  Online condolences may be offered at usherfuneralhome.com
