Helen M (Sturges) Sutton

   Helen M. Sutton, 90 of Indianapolis passed away November 22, 2015.  Helen was born November 27, 1924 to Harry and June Sturges who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Buel Sutton, grandson, Sean; daughter in law, Sharon(Jim); brothers, Eddie, and “Sandy”; sisters, Catherine, “Tommy”, Pat, and Ann; step-mother, “Bill”; and a brother, Billy and sister, Virginia who passed in their early childhood.  Survivors include her sons, Jim, John (Julie), and Ron; sisters, Barb and Fran; brothers, Rich, Joe and “Butch”; grandchildren Jill (Steve), Julie (Jim), Trisha ( Mark), Ashley, Alyssa, Zach and Carolina; great grandchildren, Alexis, Madison, Steven, Andy, Rachel, Luke and Hanna.

    When she was a small child, her neighbors Ulysis and Elye Allison helped raise her, who she always loved and called “Ma and Pa”. And as she grew older she always helped care for her many half siblings. Helen graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1943 and later that year Helen and Buel were married on Christmas Eve, 1943, and were together over 50 years until his passing in 1994. Helen retired from JC Penney after more than 20 years where she worked as credit manager at both the Monument Circle and Southern Plaza stores in Indianapolis before closing. When working on the Circle the nearby bus stop closed, so spunky Helen learned to drive when she was 50 years old and enjoyed driving until just the last few years. She was also baptized many years ago at the Drexel Gardens Christian Church, and later attended Lafayette Heights Church of Christ. In the years following her husband’s passing, Helen really enjoyed the company and love of her pet dogs, Buffy, Jake and Bailey, who also preceded her in death. During the last few years she appreciated the help and friendship she received from many of the staff at the rehab and assisted living facilities of Summit Place West, Crestwood Village, Lakeview Manor, Cumberland Trace and Washington Healthcare. The family extends their warmest thanks to those caring individuals who helped her both physically and emotionally through some of her most difficult times. Helen always made an impression on anyone she ever came in contact, with her pretty smile, sweet disposition and giving heart. She will surely be greatly missed and loved, but Helen can now rest in peace without suffering.

   Services for Mrs. Sutton are 2pm Monday, November 30, 2015 at the Usher Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Floral Park Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4-8pm on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at the funeral home. Online condolences at www.usherfuneralhome.com
