Ann C (McCann) Kane

ANN CECILE KANE, 79, of Indianapolis, peacefully passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017, at her home for the past two years, St Augustine’s, which is run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. Ann was born March 2, 1938, to the late Anthony and Nellie McCann. She married James Kane on June 11, 1960 and had four children. Jim preceded her in death in 1998.

Ann completed studies at: St. Philip Neri Elementary School, St. Agnes Academy and Marian College. She was a teacher of art, both in and out of the classroom, and may be remembered by former students of IPS, Christ the King Catholic School or Immaculate Heart of Mary Grade School, where she was a parishioner nearly forty years. Mrs. Kane returned to IHM teaching a new generation of budding artists at the after-school enrichment program several years ago.    

A lifelong Catholic, Ann’s faith was of central importance to who she was and how she lived her life. She had deep devotion to Jesus through His Blessed Mother Mary and frequently prayed the Rosary and was always storming Heaven interceding for others and in thanksgiving. She didn’t get stagnant and kept spiritually growing with spiritual literature, watching EWTN Catholic Television and many parish activities.  Ann really loved being a committed adorer in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Luke’s, where she was a member when she passed away. Her children are eternally grateful for the best gift they ever received from her ~ their faith! 

Ann was a very talented watercolorist studying at Herron Art School and took classes from Floyd Hopper and Jean Vietor. Ann was a charter member of Indiana’s first co-op art gallery, CCA (Center the for the  Creative Arts) which is currently located in Carmel, Indiana. Ann really enjoyed displaying and selling her art in several local art fairs, the Indianapolis Museum of Art rental gallery, and was accepted in many juried art shows. In the mid 1970’s Ann was thrilled and surprised when she returned from a brief break to her booth at the Broad Ripple Art Fair to learn her mom had actually sold her very first painting for her!

After leaving the teaching field, Ann spent many years in the secretarial profession including, most recently, 18 years at St. Vincent Hospital on 86th Street. Mrs. Kane truly enjoyed her job and the many forever friends she made there. 

Ann was very generous with her time and talents and was especially dedicated to helping pregnant women in crisis and new mothers in need. She volunteered taking phone calls for the  archdiocesan Birthline crisis hotline and served on the former Birthline Guild for many years. She regularly assisted and supported daughter Elizabeth in pro-life activities. Ann enjoyed working Sudoku, cryptoquip and crossword puzzles, watching classic, old movies and Colts football with her cheer gear on.  Other guilty pleasures included viewing Master Chef, So You Think You Can Dance, and Survivor.  Ann delighted in treats of Christmas cookies, Matt’s homemade goodies, Midnight Milky Ways, and dark chocolate.   Ann’s best times were with her family especially the holidays and treasured many spent at daughter Maria’s house in the later years. Her grandkids were her pride and joy and they all have great memories to treasure especially the three vacations they all took together to Hilton Head S.C. and Atlantic Beach N.C. Mrs. Kane’s favorite flowers were yellow roses and she had a greenish thumb.

Ann ‘made new friends and kept the old,’ and she treasured them all. Like sisters Margaret and Susie, Ann stayed close to many childhood friends and they loved traveling together with dear Jeanne leading the way!!  Ann and Jim parented several foster children over the years and always tried to help those less fortunate.

Those left to cherish her memory are three children, Elizabeth Kane, Matthew Kane and Maria Hodge. Ann & Jim’s son, Andrew, passed away in 2001. The other immediate family include son-in-law, David Hodge and daughters-in-law Dawn Kane Johnson and Jenny Kane Brown. Ten grandchildren were blessed to call her Nana: Ryan Kane, Samantha Kane Goocey (Brent), Christina Plummer, Zakary Kane, Erika Plummer, Joshua Kane Brown, John Plummer, James Hodge, Michael Hodge and Luke Hodge, as well as two great grandsons and a great granddaughter due in January. Ann is also survived by her dear sisters, Margaret (Maggie) McCann Schmidt and Mary Susan (Susie) McCann Dial and was preceded in death by their big brother, Tony McCann. Ann was blessed with many wonderful nieces and nephews and a beloved goddaughter/niece, Martha McCann Berghoff.

Ann’s children thank every person that cared for their amazing momma. Her time living at St Augustine’s has been a huge blessing to us all. Mom got such tender loving care from the sisters, priests, nurses, aides, doctors, kitchen and dining room staff and the amazing number of volunteers that make it happen all day, every day! We’re forever grateful for all you did for her when she was well and especially during these very difficult final weeks. Mom received excellent care from so many doctors associated with St Vincent’s Hospital, especially Randall Horine, M.D., her primary care doctor, whom she thought the world of!

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, October 30, at St. Augustine’s Home, 2345 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 AM at St. Luke Catholic Church, Indianapolis with Monsignor Joseph Schaedel officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Our Lady of Guadalupe Garden, 9001 Haverstick Road, Indianapolis.
